This page is designed for telehealth patients participating in EMDR therapy with MJ Valentine. Here you will find the bilateral stimulation tool used during your sessions, along with guidance for getting the most out of your telehealth EMDR experience.
A little preparation goes a long way. Setting up your environment before your session helps your nervous system feel safe and allows the EMDR process to work most effectively.
Choose a quiet, private room where you will not be interrupted. Let others in your home know you need uninterrupted time. Lock the door if possible and silence your phone notifications.
Position your device at eye level, roughly arm's length away. You will need to follow the bilateral stimulation tool with your eyes, so a stable, comfortable viewing angle is essential.
Ensure a stable internet connection before your session. Use a wired connection or sit close to your router. Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications to free up bandwidth.
Wearing headphones enhances the bilateral audio tones used alongside the visual tool. They also help maintain privacy and minimize distractions from external sounds.
Have a blanket, water, tissues, and any grounding objects within reach. Processing traumatic memories can bring up strong emotions, and having comfort items close helps you self-soothe.
Allow yourself at least 15 minutes of quiet time after your session. Avoid scheduling stressful activities immediately afterward. Gentle movement, journaling, or rest can help with integration.
Use this tool during your session as directed by your therapist. The glowing orb moves back and forth to guide your eye movements, supporting bilateral stimulation. Your therapist will tell you when to begin and when to stop.
Click "Begin Session" when your therapist instructs you. Follow the glowing orb with your eyes as it moves left to right. Use the speed slider to adjust the pace as needed. Click "End Session" when directed to stop.
The speed slider controls how quickly the orb moves. Your therapist will guide you to find the right pace. Slower speeds may feel more manageable during intense processing, while faster speeds can deepen the bilateral effect.
EMDR via telehealth is just as effective as in-person sessions when the right conditions are in place. Your therapist will guide you through each phase, checking in regularly to ensure you feel safe and supported.
During reprocessing, you may experience vivid memories, emotions, or physical sensations. This is a normal part of the healing process. Your therapist is present with you throughout and will help you navigate anything that arises.
If at any point you feel overwhelmed, you can signal your therapist to pause. You are always in control of the pace and direction of your session.
Notice what comes up without judgment. Let thoughts, images, and feelings move through you as the bilateral stimulation guides the process.
Your therapist has helped you develop a calm or safe place visualization. Use this anytime you need to regulate between sets of bilateral stimulation.
Raise your hand or use a verbal cue to let your therapist know if you need to pause, stop, or take a break. Communication is key in telehealth sessions.
EMDR works by allowing your brain to reprocess stored trauma. Even if a session feels intense, the process is moving you toward resolution and relief.
It is common for processing to continue between sessions. You may notice new memories, dreams, or emotional shifts. Keep a brief journal to share with your therapist at your next session.
